Prohibited Feelings
Nimsa Thapa
It was a nice, sunny day at school; birds were chirping, and kids were playing. I sat in my class, staring at the clock, waiting for the bell to ring so I could see that one person who I thought was the love of my life.
“Lia, focus!” my teacher said sternly, making me jump.
“Haha, sorry,” I said, putting my head down in embarrassment.
Finally, after a few minutes, the bell rang, and everyone ran out like it was their first time getting out of the class.
“Hey Lia, come over here; I have to tell you something,” my best friend Karina said. “Yeah, what is it?” I said, tilting my head in confusion.
I like someone,” she said.
“Really, who?” I asked, looking into her eyes with anticipation.
“It's a little awkward but… it's your guy best friend, Felix,” she said while blushing. “Oh!” I said awkwardly, not knowing how to react.
Karina had been my friend for years. I didn't want to break this friendship over a boy we both liked… well, she didn't know I liked him, but you get it!
“Sorry, I know it's a little weird, but I can't help it!” Karina said.
“Oh no, it's okay, I mean Felix and I are both just friends anyway,” I said, emphasizing the 'just.' As we walked to the cafeteria, Karina randomly asked me a question.
“Lia… can you set me up with Felix?” She said.
I hesitated slightly before saying, “Um yes, of course!” “Really! Thanks so much!”
“It's no big deal,” I said, my heart slightly hurting.
As we continued to make our way to the cafeteria, we bumped into Felix and his group of friends.
“Hey Lia!” Felix said, waving in my direction. I waved back, slightly smiling before looking towards Karina, who was blushing.
As Felix got closer, I pushed Karina towards him, knowing I did not want to.
As Karina and Felix bumped into each other, I saw that they were both blushing, giving me a sign that they probably liked each other. Seeing that, I walked away, wiping the little tear that dripped from my eyes.

It was the end of school, and I saw Felix and Karina walking together. That should have been me in Karina’s place, why was it her? Actually, why did I care, as long as she was happy… right?

spamming me with calls. “Finally, you picked up!” Karina said over the phone.
“Haha, I was just tired,” I said, sighing.
“Well, guess what!” Karina said excitedly.“What is it?” I said, hoping it was nothing about her and Felix.
“Felix and I are together; when we were talking, he confessed!” Karina said happily. “Oh,” I said in a sad tone.
“Are you sad?” Karina asked after hearing my voice
“Oh no, I'm just shocked,” I said, hiding the sadness in my voice. “Oh okay,” Karina said.
“Well, my mom is calling me, so I have to go,” I lied. “Oh okay, bye!” Karina said and hung up the phone.
I went over to my bed, covered my face with a pillow and cried my heart out.
It's sad, really; my best friend is dating my crush. Not just my crush, my life, my love, everything. But what can I say? I'll do everything to keep our friendship going. Friendship conquers all, after all!
