The Strange Yellow Line

Sadhwee Bhandari
It all started on a very good morning. I woke up on time, and for once, I had enough time to eat my breakfast. I wasn’t rushing or anything, and I even got to school on time! All the teachers were surprised because I’m always late. They said it was nice to see me on time. I was so happy! I had an awesome day at school. First, we got to play outside during break, and the lunch was really yummy. After that, we did fun activities, and best of all, we got to go home early.
Me and my friend were walking home together, talking and laughing. We were talking about the strange yellow line that we saw near my house. It wasn’t just any line–it was bright yellow, and it looked kind of out of place. We decided to avoid it because it felt weird, like something was not quite right about it. But one day, my friend was absent, and I had to walk home alone
As I was walking, I kept thinking about that yellow line. I don’t know why, but I really wanted to cross it. It felt like it was calling me, and I couldn’t stop myself. So, I walked right over it.
The moment I crossed it, everything felt different. At first, I thought I was just imagining things, but no. I felt strange, like my body was tingling. It was a weird, uncomfortable feeling, and it stayed with me until I felt normal again. My head was spinning, and I 48 Imperial World School couldn’t really explain it, but I pushed it aside and went home.
When I got inside my house, my dog, Snow, started barking at me. I was so shocked! She had never done that before. She usually gets all excited and wags her tail when I come home. But today, she was acting strange. I didn’t know what to think.
My mom came into the room and said she bought pet food and everything Snow needed. But then something even stranger happened. Someone who looked just like me walked into the room and said, “YOU LOOK JUST LIKE ME! YOU ARE MY CLONE!” I couldn’t believe it. I was staring at myself, but it wasn’t me. It was someone else who looked exactly the same. I couldn’t even speak.
I screamed, “What is going on?!” and ran to my mom, but she just looked at me like I wasn’t the real one. She said, “Get out of my house!” I was so confused. What was happening? Why was she acting like that?
It was getting dark, and I was standing outside the house, wondering what to do. I looked through the window and saw them sitting at the table, eating dinner like everything was normal. I couldn’t believe it. They were eating, but it wasn’t my family. It was like I was looking at someone else’s life.
I decided to climb in through my room’s window. It was open, and I quietly went inside. I felt like I had to get my things. I grabbed my phone, charger, all my money, and my secret snacks from my hidden stash. I was being extra careful because I didn’t want anyone to notice me. Thankfully, no one saw me.
Now, I had to figure out where to go. I walked for what felt like hours, not knowing what to do or where to go. Finally, I found a house that was for rent. I looked at the sign and saw that it was listed for 2009. I didn’t know what it meant, but it didn’t matter. No one was going to come. No one was going to live there. It seemed like the perfect place for me.
I moved the “for rent” sign and went inside. There was light inside, and the house was nice, though a little dirty. It looked like no one had lived there for a long time. I walked around, checking all the rooms. I found the biggest one and decided that would be my room.
I cleaned the house, getting it ready for me to stay. It was hard work, but I didn’t mind. It felt good to make the place my own. Then, I brought the stray dog to be my little friend. I named him Snow.
I was tired from all the work, so that night I decided to sleep with Snow. We snuggled on the couch, and it felt so soft and warm. I felt independent, like I could take care of myself. Tomorrow, I would start looking for jobs in a restaurant or a cafe. The thought made me feel good.
Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, the light went off. Snow suddenly ran away from me, barking like she was scared. I was scared too. I didn’t know what was going on. But then Snow came back, carrying something in her mouth. It was a box. She dropped it in front of me and looked at me, wagging her tail. I opened the box, and inside was a lantern and a lighter.
I picked up the lighter, trying to light the lantern, but when the flame touched it, instead of the usual yellow light, it was red. The room was not as bright, and the red light made everything look strange. I felt dizzy. The absurdity of it all made my head spin. I could hardly breathe, and before I knew it, I fainted.
When I woke up, I was outside, lying near the yellow line. It felt like a dream, like none of it was real. I didn’t dare cross the line again. I turned around and walked back home. Everything seemed normal. There was no clone, no strange happenings. Just a regular day.
But when I walked into my room, something strange was sitting on the floor. A lantern. I froze. I remembered the one from before. Hesitantly, I lit it, and to my surprise, the flame wasn’t red this time. It was violet. The room filled with the soft, eerie glow, and I couldn’t help but wonder–what was going on? What was the yellow line? And am I still dreaming?
