The Unexpected Thief

Aansi Bista

Grade : 7

It was a dark and stormy night in the small town of Celiaville. The streets were empty, except for a few brave people who were running some errands or making their way home from a late shift at work. Amongst them was Norah, a young girl in her mid-20s who had just finished her shift at the local convenience store.

Norah had always been a bit of a loner, preferring to spend her free time at home with her nose buried in a good book or binge-watching Netflix. But that night, as she walked home through the rain, she couldn’t shake the feel- ing that she was being watched. She tried to brush it off as paranoia, but as she turned onto the street, she saw a shadowy figure lurking in the bushes. Norah’s heart raced as she fumbled for her keys, trying to unlock the door to her apartment as quickly as possible. Just as she managed to slip inside and lock the door behind her, she heard a loud crash. Someone was trying to break in. Norah’s first instinct was to call the police, but as she reached for her phone, she realized that it was dead. She was completely cut off from the outside world. Panic set in as Norah tried to think of what to do next. She couldn’t just sit there and wait for the intruder to break in. She had to defend herself so, as quietly as possible, she rummaged through her drawers and cabinets, looking for anything she could use as a weapon. She settled on a baseball bat and a kitchen knife, both of which she gripped tightly as she waited for the inevitable.

The seconds ticked by, each one feeling like an eternity. Just when Norah thought she couldn’t take the tension any longer, the door burst open and a figure stumbled into the room. It was a man, soaked to the bone and shaking with fear. Norah’s initial instinct was to help him, but something about the way he was acting set off the alarm bells in her head. “Who are you?” she demanded, raising the baseball bat. The man didn’t answer, instead, he just stared at her with wide, panicked eyes. It was then that Norah noticed the large suitcase he was carrying. “What’s in the bag?” she asked, her voice full of suspicion. Again, the man didn’t answer. He just stood there, shivering and staring. Norah’s curiosity got the better of her, and she inched closer to the suitcase, trying to get a better look. The man suddenly lunged at her, trying to grab the bat out of her hands. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, the suitcase tipped over and spilled its contents onto the floor. Norah’s heart sank as she saw the stacks of cash and jewels that tumbled out. The man was a thief, and he had been trying to rob her. But Norah was determined not to be a victim. She fought back with all her might, managing to fend off the man long enough to grab his phone out of his pocket and call the police.

When the officers arrived, they quickly apprehended the man and recov- ered the stolen goods. Norah was hailed as a hero, and her bravery earned her a commendation from the Chief of Police. In the end, it was a night that Norah would never forget. She had faced down a criminal and come out on top, all thanks to her quick thinking and bravery. and as she settled down to sleep that night, she knew that she was ready for whatever life threw her way next.
